Full Tour Description
Duration: 3 hours
Prague Castle is the world’s biggest and it has played a central part in the history of the Czech Republic, and sometimes even in world history. It was founded in 880 and is thus the oldest part of the city. Not long after, craftsmen and tradesmen settled on the slopes beneath to provide their services to royalty and nobility. This became known as the Lesser Town where we will walk through towards the end of the tour.
Off to the Castle
Meet your private guide at your accommodation. From there we will head to the Castle area. We’ll take a short walk through the narrow cobblestone streets to the Charles Bridge – one of Prague’s three main attractions – and follow in the footsteps of history by crossing it, taking the same route as kings, queens and noblemen! of a bygone era. After making our way across this masterpiece we will stop to admire the austere majesty of St. Nicolas Church. After, we’ll take in the Prague Castle are and see (from the outside only) Hradčanské Square with its many palaces like the Archbishop’s Palace and Schwarzenberg Palace to name a few.
Bananas and defenestrations
Finally, it is time to ascend to the Castle via the old steps and Nerudova Street. As we walk up the hillside, we’ll discover some lovely hidden gardens and at the top, we’ll be treated to marvelous views of the city beneath us. We’ll stop a minute to savor the grandeur of the Castle area, a place that has hosted coronations, indoor jousting tournaments, banana markets and even defenestrations – the practice of throwing people out through a window, a term coined by the Czechs! And, before you leave, your guide will give you some history on the spectacular Schwarzenberg Palace and Archbishop’s Palace.
After this short stroll, we head into the Prague Castle to see the first and second courtyards. After, we’ll explore the buildings in the third courtyard, including St Vitus, the country’s largest cathedral the Old Royal Palace, St. George’s Basilica (outsidfe only) and square. The tour ends in the Castle area and you’ll have time to explore for yourself and ask your guide for plenty of tips on the city.
