Full Tour Description
Duration: 3 hours
Prague has the world’s biggest castle and it has played a central part in the events of the Czech Republic, and sometimes even in world history. On this tour, you’ll get the chance to explore it and learn about its history, ever since it was first built in 880. It is the oldest building in Prague and sits above where craftsmen and tradesmen settled and build an area that would become known as Lesser Town. You’ll get to explore this neighborhood towards end of the tour.
After meeting you at your accommodation, your guide will first take you to the Castle area. As we approach the hillside we will discover some lovely hidden gardens and catch a marvellous view of the city beneath us. As we go, we’ll savor the grandeur of its more well-known neighbour, Old Royal Palace, the oldest structure in the Castle area, a place that have served for coronations, indoor jousting tournaments, banana markets and defenestrations – the practice of throwing people out through a window, a term coined by the Czechs! Plus, we’ll make a quick visit to Golden Lane for an intriguing view of how the castle was when it lived in.
After, we’ll check out Hradčanské Square with many its Archbishop’s and Schwarzenberg Palace to name a few. Then, we’ll take a very short stroll over to St. George’s Basilica and Square before heading to our last stop – St Vitus, the country’s largest cathedral. It took almost six hundred years to build and finish and is named after a child saint that was fried in oil, but during the Middle Ages was infamous for inducing involuntary dance mania, and also protects against oversleeping, lightning strikes and animal bites.
After exploring all these magnificent sights, we’ll leave the castle via Nerudova Street and stop to admire the Church of St. Nicholas on the way back to the center of Prague. We’ll take a short walk through the narrow cobblestone streets to then cross the Charles Bridge. After making our way across this masterpiece we will end our tour near the Old Town where you can ask your guides plenty of tips and hints for the rest of your trip.
